THEY BOTH ORDERED ICED tea. Mitch had the corn beef on rye and Ally had a tuna salad on whole wheat bread. It was fun to watch her to eat. Dainty, wiping the corner of her mouth with a napkin. He listened to her talk, her laughter brought him a simple feeling of happiness he hadn’t felt in a while. Mitch didn’t even want to tell her she had a bit of celery sticking against her tooth.

He didn’t mind it and it reminded him that she was a regular person and not just some Instagram celebrity.

“Some people are staring,” Ally said with a toss of her head.

Mitch turned his head to see across the street, a crowd of people had gathered. “Let them stare,” he said in a relaxed way, turning his attention back to Ally. “We’re not doing anything wrong.”

Ally gazed down at her near empty plate. “What is it exactly we’re doing?” Her big eyes glanced up at his and Mitch found his ability to speak had gone out the window. Who knew she’d be as blunt as all that?

“I...I mean...I thought...”

“There you go!” Jenny, the local waitress, placed the bill down on the able. She was young with long blond hair pulled back into a ponytail. “If you guys need anything else, holler. No rush on the check.” She gave them a wink and started to move on. “I have to ask, are you really Allison Sinclair? That’s what everyone is saying.”

Ally sat up straighter. “I am. I’m helping out at Sprinkles Bakery, right down the street.”

Jenny’s eyes widened. “That’s so cool. Like a PR campaign?”

“Something like that,” Ally laughed. “It seems to be working!”

“Sure does. Can...would it be too much to get a photo? I have my phone.” Jenny slipped her hand in her pocket, but stopped midway, waiting for Ally to respond.

Ally hopped right up to her feet. “Only if you post it with my special #AllyBakes on all of social media!”

“Deal!” Jenny said and broke out in a wider grin than Mitch had seen in a long time. Everyone in Hamilton Springs had a sad story and Jenny was so different.

As they posed for their photo, Ally flashing a peace symbol, Mitch turned over the check to see Jenny has scribbled a message instead of an amount. On the house. I hope you’ve asked her on a date! Mitch scowled. Everyone was always up in his business. He took out enough money for a generous tip and left it with the check.

By the time he stood up, Jenny was gone and Ally turned to face him. “Thanks for lunch.”

Mitch cleared his throat. “My pleasure. Should we walk back to the bakery, or do we have a little time left?”

“A little. Not much time to tour the town but enough for one more stop, if it’s not too far away.”

“Then by all means,” Mitch said and offered Ally the crook of his arm, “one more place. A special one too.”
